Yesterday, on the 23rd, the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) issued a statement saying that if the military council were to carry out the death penalty without a trial, it would be a serious international crime and would be closely monitored.

IIMM issued this statement because there are reports that five (5) political outcasts who are incarcerated in Yangon Region’s Insein Prison will be sentenced to death today.

Among the political outcasts (5), those who were arrested as those who attacked the police on the Yangon circular train, and those who participated in the bomb blast at Insein Prison’s parcel receiving area, were arrested by the military council and sentenced to death by the military council.

It has not yet been confirmed that the political outcasts sentenced to death by the military council have been executed. RFA News today that the family members of those who were sentenced to death did not confirm that they had been sentenced to death.

The statement also stated that imposing the death penalty or holding a person for a period of time without providing the basic information necessary for a fair investigation is a crime against humanity or a war crime.

The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) issued a statement on September (19) saying that it is unacceptable for the military council to impose severe punishment and suppress dissent, and it strongly condemns this. Today (24), the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) declared that the military council’s death penalty is a crime.

In 2018, the UN Human Rights Council established the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), which reports to the UN Human Rights Council on serious international crimes and serious human rights violations.
