On September 19, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) issued a request for the release of five (5) political exiles in Yangon’s Insein prison, to allow them to see lawyers during their detention, and to allow them to see their families and health care.

It is widely known that the 5 Political Prisoners, who were reported to be sentenced to death on September 24th, namely, Ko Kaung Phye Son Oo, Ko Kyaw Win Soe, Ko San Lin Maung, Ko Zeya Phyo and Ma Myat Phyo Pwint, will be hanged.

It is learned that these 5 Political Prisoners were involved in the shootout on the train around Yangon. They were charged under the Terrorist Law and the Weapons Law and were ordered to be hanged by the Hlaing Township Court.
Wong Chen, a member of the APHR board, said that the military council’s use of heavy punishment and oppression to suppress dissent is unacceptable and he strongly condemns it.

Last July 2022, two well-known political activists, 88 generation student leader U Kyaw Min Yu (or) U Jimmy, NLD U Phyo Zeya Thaw, and 2 civilians, U Hla Myo Aung and U Aung Thu Zaw, were sentenced to death by the military council.
