A Kenyan national who was trafficked to Myawaddy, Karen State, on the Thai-Myanmar border, fled across a five-hour mountain road to Thailand after being tricked into entering a tiger trap, and arrived in Phetchaburi, Tak Province, where he asked villagers for help and then sent them to the Phetchaburi police station, according to Thai news outlet The Reporters.

The Kenyan national was tricked into traveling to Bangkok to work as a well-paid chef in Thailand and arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on October 5, 2024. When he arrived at the airport, he was met by two more Kenyans and taken to Mae Sot, Tak Province, where he crossed the river to the Myanmar side, the escaped man told police.

The Kenyan national was beaten when he arrived on the Myanmar side of the border, saying he did not agree to the job because it was different from the one he was supposed to work as a chef. He was beaten with electric shocks and baseball bats, leaving his hands with bruises.
The man is said to have tried to escape for four months after learning he had been tricked into working. He also said he had been tricked by several other foreigners, according to The Reporters, a Thai news outlet.
Thai authorities are currently investigating whether the Kenyan national, who escaped, will be taken to the Kenyan embassy in Thailand and sent back to his home country.
