On January 12, 2024, 37-year-old Aung Ko was arrested by four Thai soldiers at around 11:00 a.m. on the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Sot, Tak District, Thailand. Three of the four soldiers tortured him to death today (November 14). Published in the Fortify Rights report.
Aung Koko, 37, and Sirachuch, 24, are members of the Community-Based Security Force (Chor Ror Bor) and were arrested by 4 Thai soldiers on January 12. The Fortify Rights report states that after the two were arrested and interrogated by Thai soldiers, Aung Koko was severely beaten with a long wooden stick.
On examination of the deceased’s body, it was found that he had severe bruises, bleeding, and bruises on his forehead, around his cheekbones, and on his nose. Then almost his entire back was severely injured. A 1-inch deep laceration was also found on his right elbow.
It is known that Sirachuch died in Aung Ko Ko due to being beaten by (3) Thai soldiers, and on September (27) the Thai court sentenced Sirachuch as an accomplice in that death and sentenced him to three (4) years and (4) months in prison.
The Thai government must be held accountable for her death. “The soldiers directly responsible should be prosecuted without delay,” said Matthew Smith, CEO of Fortify Rights. He continued, “The military’s involvement in the killing of Aung Ko is currently responsible, Despite the lack of accountability, the Thai authorities can change this situation and prevent criminals from being impunity. Our report is intended to help the authorities do justice in this matter,” he said.
Thailand is a country that has recently been recognized as a new member of the Human Rights Council in October. As a member of the Human Rights Council, instead of protecting the arbitrary arrests, tortures and killings, it has been found that the perpetrators have not been prosecuted until now, which is inconsistent with human rights standards.
